Triple talaq bill passes in Rajya Sabha by 99 votes

Date:

The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 that seeks to ban the practice of Triple talaq or instant talaq by making it a criminal offense.

The bill, introduced by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, received 99 votes in favour whereas 84 members voted against it in the upper house.

The JD(U) and AIADMK, both allies of the ruling party, chose to stage a walkout in the
Rajya Sabha. The Bill was passed by a voice vote in Lok Sabha last week.

Tabling the Bill Tuesday, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “This issue should not be seen through a political prism or votebank politics. This is a question of humanity.” While the BJP-led NDA government is keen on criminalising the practice of instant triple talaq, the Opposition accused it of “destroying the institution of marriage.”

Meanwhile, with the slogans of ‘Beti bacchao, beti padaho ka kya hua,’ Opposition raised slogans in Lok Sabha over the Unnao rape victim’s accident. “It is a blot on the civlised society,” Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, demanding a response from Home Minister Amit Shah.
