Rural India has declared itself ‘open defecation free’: PM Modi in Gujarat on 150th Gandhi Jayanti

On the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said rural India and its villages have declared themselves ‘open defecation free’.

Speaking at an event near Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat, PM Modi said: “Today rural India, its villages have declared themselves open-defecation free. They have used self-inspiration, self-will and co-operation to achieve this through the Swachh Bharat Mission.”

PM Modi was addressing 20,000 village heads at the ‘Swachh Bharat Diwas’ programme, wherein he talked about Mahatma Gandhi, saying sanitation, conservation of environment and animals, all these things were dear to Gandhi ji.

PM Modi also said: “Today whole world is appreciating and awarding us. Providing toilets to more than 60 crore people in 60 months, building more than 11 crore toilets, whole world is amazed by this.”
