Govt withdraws SPG protection given to Gandhi family

Date:

The government has decided to withdraw the Special Protection Group (SPG) protection from Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi.

The trio will now be accorded Z+ security cover by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) all over India. The decision comes following the Home Ministry’s routine assessment taking the inputs of all agencies.

Earlier in August, the Centre had removed SPG protection for former Prime Minister and Congress leader Manmohan Singh.

The Special Protection Group is an elite armed force that provides proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and his or her family members. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will now be the only person who will be under SPG protection.
