I respect Mahatma Gandhi, my remarks are being distorted: Pragya Thakur

Date:

Amid controversy on her Godse remark, BJP MP Pragya Thakur on Friday tendered an apology in Lok Sabha, saying “I apologise If I have hurt any sentiments.”

Replying on her remarks, the Bhopal MP told the Parliament that her statements are being distorted, adding that she respects Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to the nation. “My statements made in Parliament are being distorted. I respect Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to the nation,” Thakur said.

The BJP MP also said that despite being acquitted by a court she was dubbed a terrorist. “A member of the House referred to me as ‘terrorist’. It is an attack on my dignity. No charges against me have been proven in court.”

She was referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks. On Thursday, Rahul had tweeted, “Terrorist Pragya calls terrorist Godse, a patriot. A sad day, in the history of India’s Parliament.”

Today, her statement was followed by protests by Opposition leaders who chanted slogans of ‘Mahatma Gandhi ki Jai, & ‘Down, down Godse’ in the House. After the continuous disruptions in the lower house, it was adjourned till 2.30 pm.
