COVID-19: Death toll crosses 1700 in mainland China; total reported cases touch 71,000

The death toll from the Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has gone up to 1,770 in China, up by 105 from the previous day, with the total number of registered cases now standing at 70,548 according to the country’s National Health Commission.

At least 100 of the new deaths were from the province of Hubei, the epicentre of the epidemic.

Across the country, there were 2,048 new confirmed infections, about 1,933 from Hubei alone, pushing the new total to 70,548.

Earlier, the local Hubei health commission said that the death toll from the new coronavirus in the province stood at 1,596, while 5,623 people have recovered in the province, where the current coronavirus outbreak began in December.

On Sunday, Hubei announced tough new measures to try to curb the outbreak, ordering its cities to block roads to all private vehicles.

The deadly Coronavirus originated from Wuhan, China in December 2019 and has since then spread in various cities across the world.
