COVID-19: New York says ‘yes’ to weddings over Zoom

Date:

Are you a resident of New York City whose wedding plans were spoilt due to lockdown imposed because of the deadly coronavirus?

If they answer is ‘yes’, get ready to say ‘yes’ when your partner ultimately pops the question, albeit virtually.

The New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed an order allowing online couples to get married online through applications such as Zoom.

“You can do it by Zoom. Yes or no?” he said in his briefing on Saturday.

According to the order signed by the governor, couples can tie the knot online and apply for marriage registration certificates online. Clerks will be permitted to conduct the ceremonies, all virtually.

In fact, New York is not the only state in the US to permit this.

The state of Colorado has also permitted the couples to apply for online marriage certificates.

A county in the state of Ohio has permitted couples engaged in the frontline services related to COVID-19 to apply for certificates and get married online.

Other than the US, the United Arab Emirates has also permitted the online registration of marriages.

India, meanwhile, remains cautious of this online application. Last week, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs barred the use of this app by government officials for official purposes and issued a detailed security advisory for private use.
