With biggest one-day spike of nearly 7,000 COVID-19 cases, India now among 10 worst-hit nations

India witnessed the highest ever spike of 6,977 positive cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,38,845, according to the Health Ministry Monday morning update.

With this, India has now overtaken Iran and has emerged as the 10th worst-hit country by the novel coronavirus after four days of record spikes in the number of cases.

The United States tops the list of most affected country by the pandemic followed by Brazil, Russia, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Turkey.

With 154 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the deaths toll now reaches 4,021. Out of the total number of cases, 77,103 are active cases and 57,721 have been cured.

Maharashtra continues to remain the worst affected state with 50,231 COVID-19 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (16,277), Gujarat (14,056) and Delhi (13,418).

The increase in the number of cases in India comes after the government gave considerable relaxations to the people in the fourth phase of the nationwide lockdown.

Moreover, India has ramped up testing to detect COVID-19 cases in the country. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 30,33,591 samples have been tested as on May 25, 2020, 9 AM. The number of samples tested in 24 hours is 90,170.
