COVID-19 | India overtakes UK to become 4th worst-hit nation as biggest-ever spike breaches 10k mark

India’s rapid increase in its COVID-19 tally has now witnessed another biggest single-day spike as the country reported nearly 11,000 cases and nearly 400 deaths on Friday.

India recorded the highest-ever spike of 10,956 cases, as well as the highest number of deaths- 396 – according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 2,97,535 including 1,41,842 active cases, 1,47,195 cured/discharged/migrated and 8,498 deaths.

With this jump, India has now overtaken United Kingdom to become the fourth worst-hit nation globally.

UK, which now stands at the fifth place globally, has a tally of 292,860 COVID-19 cases. United States tops the charts as it has now crossed the 2 million mark with its reported cases, followed by Brazil (802,828) and Russia (501,800).

The COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra continue to soar with the number reaching 97,648. Tamil Nadu‘s coronavirus count stands at 38,716 while cases in Delhi reached 34,687.

The increase in the number of cases in the country comes after the government gave considerable relaxations to the people in the fourth phase of the nationwide lockdown followed by the measures for Unlock 1.0.

Moreover, India has ramped up testing to detect COVID-19 cases in the country. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 53,63,445 samples have been tested as on Jun 12, 2020, 9 AM. The number of samples tested in 24 hours is 1,50,305.
