Fact Check: A 2019 Picture From Kolkata Pride Parade Shared With False JNU Link

Date:

A picture of a person in a saree is being shared on social media with a claim that Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students are protesting against the tradition of Hindu married women sporting bindis, wearing sarees and applying vermilion.

the Facebook post read.

(Translation: You will not understand the photo. We’ll explain. This is a progressive student of JNU. They are opposed to Hindu women wearing sarees, bindi, and Sindoor. The story is not over yet, look at the back, a boy is wearing a classical dress (saffron dhoti, kurta) and has earrings in his nose and vermilion on demand. They are protesting that this dress is for women and men should oppose it. You know when this gimmick was done – During the CAA Protest. Now you think ● What does it has to do with CAA ● What is its relation to JNU studies ● What are they opposing Hindu culture. it is a mental perversion called Left)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

We put the picture through Reverse Image Search and found a similar image in an article by ‘Youth Ki Awaaz’ from December 2019.

The headline of the article read: “Rainbow Over Saffron”:16 Photos On How CAA Found A Place At Kolkata’s Pride Walk.

And the caption of this picture read, “Panchali Kar participating in the walk.”

Based on this, we ran a search and found Panchali on Facebook and Instagram. Moreover, the same picture was also uploaded on Kar’s Instagram profile on December 30, 2019, and the geotag read – Calcutta, Baghbazar Street, Baghbazar India.

Panchali Kar is a theatre artist, gender rights activist & intersectional feminist based out of Kolkata. We then reached out to Panchali, who confirmed to us that it is from the Kolkata Pride Parade from 2019 and has nothing to do with JNU.

“This picture is making rounds since 2019. It is from Kolkata Pride. Yes there has been anti-CAA slogans in pride because as much pride stands much for LGBTQIA+ rights, it equivocally stands up against majoritarian oppression. This picture has got nothing to do with JNU,” Kar told NewsMobile.

“I have seen this picture being posted a few hundred thousand times without context. Initially, I used to report and stuff but I got tired,” Kar added.

Hence, based on the above fact check, it is clear that the viral picture is NOT from any protest at JNU and is being shared with a false and misleading claim.
