Fact Check: Did Naseeruddin Shah Tweet About Rising Fuel Prices & MSP? Here’s The Truth

Date:

With fuel prices soaring across the country in the past few weeks, the central government has been facing a lot of criticism on social media. And it is in this backdrop that a lot of misinformation is also being circulated.

In one such post, we found that a screengrab of what appears to be a tweet made by Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah, is doing rounds on social media platforms.

The post reads, “Khud ko Rs. 30 Ke tel pe Rs. 60 ka Tax chahiye aur agar Kisan apni mehnat ka MSP mange toh deshdrohi hain.

(Translation: the government wants Rs 60 as a tax on oil which costs Rs.30, but the farmers who have been demanding MSP are called Anti National.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

To verify whether Naseeruddin Shah tweeted this, we searched for his official Twitter account. However, we were unable to find his official Twitter account, rather discovered several parody and unverified accounts.

After this, we ran a keyword search on google, looking for his verified Twitter handle. On searching, we found out that he doesn’t use microblogging platform Twitter and the same was confirmed by his wife Ratna Pathak Shah.

We came across this news report published by India TV, which read, “Veteran actor Ratna Pathak Shah on Monday clarified that her husband, actor Naseeruddin Shah does not have a Twitter account, after an unverified profile in his name posted a series of tweets about the ongoing farmers agitation on the microblogging site.”

“This account, which has nearly 49 thousand followers on Twitter, had also tweeted a video interview of Naseeruddin Shah that the 70-year-old actor gave to the human rights movement Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) last month in the support of farmers.”

“Ratna Pathak Shah said the couple has been “quite annoyed” with the fake profile, operating on Twitter since July 2019. They have also “tried to complain” to both Twitter and Cyber Crime Cell, she said, but to no avail,” the article reported.

This confirms that even earlier, there were many fake posts that were being circulated by his fake/ parody accounts.

Thereby, after going through all the above information, we can establish that the screengrab of the tweet in the above post is fake and misleading.

Naseeruddin Shah didn’t tweet anything like this, his name is being used by a fake profile.
