Fact Check: Does BJP Manifesto Mention Tamil Nadu’s Name Will Be Changed To ‘Dakshina Pradesh’?

Date:

A picture post on social media claiming that Bhartiya Janata Party has proposed to change the name of Tamil Nadu to ‘Dakshina Pradesh’ in their manifesto is doing rounds on the internet.

The caption of the post reads: ‘தமிழ்நாடு பெயர் “தக்‌ஷிண பிரதேஷ்” என்று சமஸ்கிருதத்தில் மாற்றப்படும்.#பாஜக தேர்தல் அறிக்கை!!இதைத்தான் இத்தனை நாளா நோண்டிட்டு இருந்தயா அப்ப நோட்டாவ முந்தின மாதிரி தான்…’.

(Google Translation: Tamil Nadu’s name will be changed to ′′Dakshina Pradesh′′ in Sanskrit. #BJP election manifesto!!)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be FAKE.

We put the picture through Reverse Image Search and found that the picture is taken from BJP Tamil Nadu’s post on Twitter dated March 22, 2021. The post mentions agricultural and welfare reforms for farmers in Tamil Nadu.

It mentions that an ‘Agricultural Irrigation Department’ will be set up under the Public Works Department of Government of Tamil Nadu.

We further looked for media reports mentioning any such promise in the manifesto but could not find anything remotely close to the claim.

We then checked the BJP manifesto for Tamil Nadu released on March 22, 2021, but did not find any such proposal in the manifesto. Find the manifesto here.

From the above investigation, it is abundantly clear that no proposal to rename Tamil Nadu to ‘Dakshina Pradesh’ is made in the BJP manifesto.

Hence, the claim is fake.
