A message is being shared on social media with a claim that online shopping giant Amazon is offering free gifts to all its users as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations.

A Facebook user shared the message with a link. The message reads: Amazon 30th anniversary celebration.

The message also appears to have gone viral on WhatsApp and is being shared across groups.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above message and found it to be FAKE.

Firstly, we noticed that the link in the viral message has an incorrect Amazon spelling.

Then we clicked on the link, following which a message popped up, which even has the Amazon logo on it.

The message reads: “Today, 27 March, 2021, you have been chosen to participate in our survey. It will only take you a minute and you will receive a fantastic prize: a Huawei Mate 40 Pro 5G Full Netcom 8GB + 256GB (bright black)! Each Wednesday we randomly choose 100 users to give them a chance to win amazing prizes. Today’s prize is a Huawei Mate 40 Pro 5G Full Netcom 8GB + 256GB (bright black)! There will be 100 lucky winners. This survey aims to improve the quality of service for our users and your participation will be rewarded 100%. You only have0 minutes and 00 seconds, to answer this survey ! Hurry up, the number of prizes available is limited!”

The message also has a survey that collects the user’s personal data including preferences and taste.  After filling the survey one has to choose a box from a set of 12, one out of which reportedly contains a present or prize. The link then says that in order to claim the prize, the user needs to forward the link to 5 groups or 20 friends on WhatsApp. However, users never get their gift.

We also checked Amazon’s original website, amazon.com and amazon.in, but not find any such offer.

We also searched for related news items and found that several media outlets have also reported about the fake message.

Hence, from the above information, we can state that the claim in the viral message is FALSE. It seems nothing but a scam and might result in loss of money or theft of personal data.
