Navjot Singh Sindhu Surrenders After SC Sentenced One-Year Imprisonment

Date:

New Delhi: A day after the Supreme Court sentenced Congress leader Navjot Singh Sindhu to one-year imprisonment in the 1988 road rage case, the former cricketer on Friday surrendered before Chief Judicial Magistrate. He is under judicial custody.

“He (Navjot Singh Sidhu) has surrendered himself before Chief Judicial Magistrate. He is under judicial custody. Medical examination and other legal procedures will be adopted,” Surinder Dalla, media advisor to Navjot Singh Sidhu said.

Earlier, Sidhu’s lawyer senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi sought a week’s time for his client to surrender citing some “medical conditions”

Soon after the Supreme Court sentence, Sidhu tweeted he “will submit to the majesty of the law.”

Cricketer-turned-politician was acquitted in connection with the culpable homicide charges but was convicted of the offence of voluntarily causing hurt. The court had earlier imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on Sidhu and had acquitted Sidhu’s associate, Rupinder Singh Sandhu, in the case.

The Sessions Court Judge of Patiala had on September 22, 1999, acquitted Sidhu and his associate, due to a lack of evidence in the case and giving the benefit of the doubt.

It was then challenged by the victim’s families before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had in 2006, convicted and sentenced Sidhu to three years imprisonment. Sidhu then filed an appeal before the apex court challenging this order.

Sidhu had allegedly hit Gurnam Singh during a road rage incident. The incident took place on December 27, 1988.
