World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5th to spread worldwide consciousness among the population regarding the environment.
It also gives out a message to the global population that nature should not be undervalued and it should not be taken for granted at any cost.
Here are seven things we can do to help save the earth:
Spread awareness
As an environment enthusiast, you can spread awareness by encouraging your family members, friends and even colleagues to do their part and give them information. Inform everyone about this year about the theme or spread awareness about the environment in general.
Build a small farm or garden
You can easily turn your terrace into a small garden to grow edible plants as well as flowers. This can help the environment and also keep your house cool. For those who are not blessed with huge spaces, start with a sapling or potato in a bag or a small sprout garden.
Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Renew, Recycle
If you’re not already into this habit, this day is a great day to start. These 5R’s are magic mantras when it comes to environmental conservation and sustainable usage.
Say no to plastic
Try and reuse plastic and avoid using single-use plastic like cutlery and bags. In Uttrakhand, plastic bags have been banned from usage due to its ill effects on the environment.
Rainwater harvesting
Rainwater harvesting helps reduce flooding, erosion, and groundwater contamination. On the other hand, irrigating with rainwater helps replenish groundwater supplies. The buildings we live in should ideally have rainwater harvesting.
Segregation
People should start the practice of segregating waste according to biodegradable and non-biodegradable. This eases the process of recycling.
