Microsoft To Shut Its Oldest Browser Internet Explorer After 27 years; Netizens Go Nostalgic

Date:

Washington: Microsoft on Monday announced the retirement of an “old friend”, Internet Explorer, one of the oldest browsers after 27 years of service.

Launched in the year 1995 as an add-on-package for Windows 95, soon became an integral part of day-to-day browsing and surfing on the Internet.

Microsoft later started providing the browser free as part of the main package. The browser will cease to exist from June 15th according to various media reports.

The browser reached its saturation point in the year 2003, with the user base gradually declining with new and better-updated browsing platforms. Internet Explorer couldn’t keep pace with its competitors in terms of speed and user interface.

Microsoft Edge was termed the “future of Internet Explorer”. The tech giant claimed that Edge was “quicker, more secure, with a more contemporary browsing experience.”

However, Microsoft stopped updating and developing Edge in 2016 and finally phased out Internet Explorer.

Netizens have gone nostalgic with the announcement of Internet Explorer retirement and flooded social media with memes on the same.
