Fact Check: Viral Video Of Cow Attacking Leopard Is From Uttarakhand, NOT Kerala

Date:

A disturbing video of a leopard holding a cow by the neck through a  roadside barricade fence is being widely shared on social media claiming that the visuals are from Pamba Road in Kerala.

The video is being shared on Facebook with the caption in Malayalam: “ പമ്പ റോഡിൽ പശുവിനെ പുലി പിടിച്ചപ്പോൾ.. വീഡിയോ കാണാം”

(English translation: You can watch the video when a tiger caught a cow on the Pampa Road)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim and found it to be MISLEADING.

Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. This search directed us to an article published by Times of India on August 16, 2022, which carried the same viral video. The article reads, “A video showing a leopard killing a cow near Ranikhet in Uttarakhand went viral on social media. The leopard’s strong jaw held the cow’s neck till the bovine gave up.”

The same video was also carried by a local media channel “Ranikhet News” with the caption, “At this time a video is becoming increasingly viral, in which a leopard attacks a cow on the roadside and catches it. Then a person passing by the roadside made a video of this incident from his car, the driver tried to save the cow but he could not succeed and the leopard dragged the cow. This video is of Takula Basoli.” The video location states it is from Almora, Uttarakhand.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that a video from Uttarakhand is being shared as that from Kerala.
