Fact Check: Viral Clip Showing Sadhus Beaten in Sangli District of Maharashtra Is Misleading

According to a report by India Today, four sadhus who were suspected of being child-lifters were beaten in Maharashtra’s Sangli district on September 14, 2022.

The incident happened at Lavanga village in Jat tehsil. Four men from Uttar Pradesh were driving from Bijapur in Karnataka to the temple town of Pandharpur. On the way, when they asked a boy for directions, some locals suspected them as criminal gangs attempting to abduct children.

In the above backdrop. a video is viral on social media showing some people beating the sadhus. The video is claimed to be of the recent Pandharpur case.

The caption associated with the video reads: “Four Sadhus, who hail from Uttar Pradesh, were heading towards the temple town of Pandharpur from Bijapur in Karnataka in a car. They halted in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, where they were assaulted and lynched by a mob on suspicion of being child-lifters. Six arrested in this regard so far. The second video shows the mob dragging some sadhus out of the car and beating them after checking their Aadhaar card that they belong to Uttar Pradesh. This could have been Palghar 2.0..”

NewsMobile did a fact-check and found the claim to be misleading.

However, we found the same video published by IBC24, dated August 8, 2022. According to the description: In Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, robbers had come to a village as monk. But the vigilant villagers identified the robbers and started beating them. Six people were arrested in the incident.

A GIF of the incident was also published by Dainik Jagran one month ago. According to the report, villagers beat up thugs who came as sadhus with sticks. In Raisen, they ran away with ornaments and money in the name of doing exorcism; six arrested.

Thus, we can ascertain that the viral claim is misleading.
