Fact Check: 2016 Image Viral as Recent Killing of Stray Dogs in Kerala

Date:

A police probe was launched in Kottayam’s Moolakkulam in Kerala on September 13, 2022, after the carcass of several stray dogs were found. The dogs were suspected of having been poisoned.

In the above context, an image of dead stray dogs has gone viral on social media with a text embedded on it that reads: “Boycott केरला आइये शपथ ले. की हम कभी केरला नहीं जायेंगे केरला Tourism को बढ़ावा नहीं देंगे. केरला में बनी वस्तुओ का इस्तेमाल नहीं करेंगे. LAMES केरला में जहर दे कर बेजुबान जानवरो को मारा जा रहा है. (English translation: ” Let’s take oath to Boycott Kerala. We will never go to Kerala, will not promote Kerala Tourism. Will not use items made in Kerala. In Kerala, innocent animals are being killed by poisoning.”)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile did the fact check, and found it to be misleading.

On doing a Google Reverse Image Search, we found the same image uploaded by India Today, dated September 29, 2016, with a caption: “Members of the Kalady panchayat with dead strays.” According to reports, the image is of the Kalady panchayat of Ernakulam, where around 22 stray dogs were allegedly killed.

To our surprise, the same image had been published by Hindustan Times on October 31, 2016, with a caption: “Vigilantes at a police station with bodies of stray dogs they have killed. (HT Photo)”

Hence, we can ascertain that the viral claim is misleading.
