Fact Check: Old Video of Cubs Attacking an Impala Viral as Namibian Cheetahs Preying on Deer at Kuno National Park

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed eight cheetahs at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh on September 17, 2022. In the above context, a video is being shared on social media, claiming that the Namibian cheetahs are attacking a deer.

(English translation: The deer were released in Kuno Park for this reason; cheetahs are creating panic in the park and roaming around for food.)

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be misleading.

We found the same video uploaded on the Lemurt Wildlife Tours YouTube channel, dated August 17, 2022, having a title: “Kisaru, one of the senior matriarch in the Mara ecosystem, with her cubs killed an impala.”

From the above video, it is clear that cubs are attacking an impala, not a deer.  Moreover, the video has been uploaded way before the Namibian cheetahs were brought to Kuno National Park.

As per the geotags, the video is from Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, and NOT India.

On searching further, we also found a tweet by the Department of Forest, MP dated September 21, 2022, mentioning that Kuno National Park already has chital, known as spotted deer, and no extra deer have been brought in.

Hence, it is clear that the viral post is misleading.
