Fact Check: Clipped Video Of Rahul Gandhi Viral With Misleading Claims

Date:

A 14-second video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi delivering a speech is doing rounds on social media. In the speech, he can be heard talking about fueling the Indian economy with petrol and kickstarting the engine. Users are sharing this clip mocking him for meaningless talks like measuring flour in litres.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with the caption:

(English Translation: I wait for Rahul Gandhi’s speech because whenever the man speaks, I get raw masala to post.. ‘Ab petrol with tractor-truck Rahul Baba’ This work can be done only by Rahul Baba if he can give flour in litres, you can drive tractor-truck by putting petrol in it.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video and found the claim to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we were led to a tweet on the official handle of the Indian National Congress, on April 20, 2019. The keyframes starting 12:00 match exactly with the viral video and the tweet suggests that it is of Rahul Gandhi’s public meeting in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh.

Watching the entire 23-minute video we get to know that Gandhi was speaking about the advantages of NYAY Yojna, the minimum wage support programme of the INC, to give a jumpstart to the Indian economy. This is when he used the analogy of petrol and an engine. It is evident from the video that the viral clip has been clipped in a way to present the analogy out of context, and in turn, to mock Gandhi.

We found a shorter 14-minute version of the same speech uploaded on YouTube on April 20, 2019, by a verified channel named Political Hub. The speech in the video was titled: Rahul Gandhi Speech in Bhilai, Chhatisgarh | Loksabha Elections 2019 and matched with the speech in the tweet. The video keyframes starting at 11:12 match exactly with the viral video.

Here too, we can hear Gandhi explaining the benefits of NYAY Yojna to the people of Chhattisgarh before giving the analogy of petrol and engine.

Finally, we came across a news article titled: Nyay scheme will be ‘petrol’ for India’s economy: Rahul Gandhi published on April 20, 2019, by The Pioneer corroborating the claims in the videos. According to the article, Rs 72,000 was to be given to poor families per year and it was being envisaged as a “surgical strike” on poverty.

Therefore, it is clear from our investigation that the clipped video of Rahul Gandhi speaking about fueling the Indian economy with petrol and starting the engine has been shared online without context and is misleading.
