FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral picture and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search, we traced a news article, titled: World Cup Recap รวมเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในรอบแบ่งกลุ่มฟุตบอลโลก 2018 (English translation: World Cup Recap includes events from the group stages of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.) published on June 29, 2018, on a Thai news outlet The standard.

The article gives a recap of the entire FIFA World Cup, Russia, 2018. One of the images in the article matches exactly with the viral picture and the description informs that Son Heung-min cried after his team’s defeat against Mexico, which eliminated them from the tournament. This proves that the picture has been online since 2018.

Another post, dated June 24, 2018, published on Imgur an online image-sharing and hosting platform, says: President Moon Jae-in consoles Son Heung-min after South Korea is knocked out of the World Cup. Here too, we can watch the player crying. And we get to know that the president of South Korea consoled the player after their team’s exit from the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

We could not find a single credible source informing that this incident occurred after the match between South Korea and Ghana.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral picture, claiming Son Heung-min cried after his team’s defeat to Ghana, is misleading.
