Chhapra Hooch Tragedy: Death Toll 65, CM Says ‘No compensation’

Date:

Patna: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Friday, said that his government would not provide financial compensation to the families of those who died by consuming spurious liquor.

The Bihar CM made the statement inside the state assembly after an uproar over the rising death toll. The death toll swelled up to 65, with many still hospitalized.

Addressing the state assembly, Nitish Kumar firmly stated “No compensation will be given to people who died after drinking…We have been appealing- if you drink, you will die…those who talk in favour of drinking will not bring any good to you…”

“Please do not take such a stand… have always looked upon Left parties as allies… if you people feel prohibition is wrong then say upfront. The law was brought in with the consent of all. If all today think we were in the wrong, we may withdraw it,” he added.

The sale and consumption of alcohol were banned in Bihar by the Nitish government in 2016.

Meanwhile, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Bihar government and state police chief over the rising deaths and has asked for a response in four weeks’ time.
