Fact Check: Video of Malaysian Footballer Faiz Subri’s Freekick Goal Falsely Linked to Sunil Chhetri

Date:

A viral video, showing a football player scoring a goal from a freekick followed by a series of photos of the Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri, is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the video, claiming that the player in the video is Sunil Chhetri himself.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: আমার দেখা ওয়ান অফ দি বেস্ট ফ্রী কিক এই মানুষটার ভুল জায়গায় জন্ম হয়ে গেছেআমাদের সবার গর্ব প্রিয় সুনীল ছেত্রী (English translation: One of the best free kick I’ve ever seen This man was born in the wrong place Our pride dear Sunil Chhetri)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be false.

Running the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, we found a news article in The Hindustan Times, dated December 3, 2016 and titled: Watch | Malaysian beats Messi in 2016’s top goals with ‘swerving thunderbolt’.

The article informs that the player in the video is a Malaysian footballer named Mohamad Faiz Subri, and the goal in the video was scored while he was playing for Penang state in the Malaysian Super League in February 2016. The goal entered the list of the best three goals of the year in FIFA, leaving behind Messi and Neymar.

The news article also contains a YouTube video from the official channel of FIFA. The video, titled: Mohd Faiz Subri Goal | FIFA PUSKAS AWARD 2016 WINNER, published on November 21, 2016, matches exactly with the viral clip. The title and description also clarify that the player in the video is Mohamad Faiz Subri from Malaysia.

A Facebook post from November 8, 2020, on the official page of the Asian Football Confederation, matches exactly with the viral clip and the caption states ‘Happy rd birthday, Faiz Subri! Let’s look at the goal that made him the 2016 FIFA Puskas Award winner!’ confirming that the goal was, indeed, scored by Faiz Subri from Malaysia and not India’s Sunil Chhetri.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video with the claims of the player being India’s Sunil Chhetri is false.
