Fact Check: 2021 Video of Saving a Deer in Kazakhstan Erroneously Linked to the Recent US Winter Storm

Date:

The US and Canada experienced a severe cold wave towards the end of 2022 killing over 60 people as the temperatures dropped massively to negatives. Several flights were cancelled and the electricity of over 1.5 million households was cut off owing to the cold weather and continuous storms.

Against this backdrop, a viral video showing two men saving a freezing deer wandering on the road with its eyes, mouth, and ears covered in snow is doing the rounds on social media. Users have shared the video linking it to US winter storms.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with the caption: The first post this year is a show of humanity and empathy, we missed it last year. Extreme cold weather across many parts of the US and Canada has been extremely harsh for the people and wildlife. This crazy footage shows two walkers who spotted a deer with its mouth, eyes & ears completely frozen over. Brilliant effort to help

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we identified a tweet, published on the official handle of RT a Russian state-affiliated media house, dated March 4, 2021. According to the tweet, this incident occurred in Kazakhstan.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search, we found a YouTube video, dated March 4, 2021, titled: Frozen deer saved by locals in Kazakhstan, published on the official channel of Press Television  a news channel based out of Austria.

The video matches the viral clip and the description of the YouTube video informs that the incident happened on February 25, 2021, and the Kazakhstan residents who saved the deer are named: Abylaikhan Kuandyk and Nurzhan Makayev.

A Spanish news article titled: Salvan a ciervo con cara congelada por el frío (VIDEO) (English translation: They saved a deer with a frozen face due to the cold) published on a Mexican digital newspaper SDP noticias, dated March 5, 2021.

The article corroborates the claim made by RT and Press television that the video was shot in Kazakhstan in March 2021.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming two men saved a freezing deer during the US winter storm is misleading.
