Fact Check: Viral Video of Rahul Gandhi’s Reply to a Query on T-Shirt Shared with Misleading Claims

Date:

A video showing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saying: “As long as it is going on… When it won’t work we will stop” is widely shared on social media, claiming that he said this in context to Bharat Jodo Yatra. In the video, Rahul Gandhi is seen wearing a T-shirt and is on his way to attend an event. The Bharat Jodo Yatra, which started in the month of September, has covered a distance of about 2,800 km. There is also a lot of discussion on social media about Rahul Gandhi’s T-shirt.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “जब तक चल रही है… जब नहीं काम करेगी तो रोक देंगे… For Rahul Gandhi, Bharat Jodo Yatra is timepass” (English translation: As long as it is going on… When it won’t work we will stop… For Rahul Gandhi, India Jodo Yatra is a time pass)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search with relevant keywords, we identified an ANI tweet carrying the same viral video on December 28, 2022, with a caption: “Congress MP Rahul Gandhi replies to a question about him wearing a T-shirt. Reporter to Rahul Gandhi: Today also in T-shirt… Rahul Gandhi: T-shirt hi chal rahi hai aur jab tak chal rahi hai chalayenge”.

Searching with the keywords ‘Rahul T-shirt question’ on Twitter, we found the tweet of TV9 journalist Vikrant Singh. He had posted the video in his tweet on 28 December. As per the video, when Rahul Gandhi was asked a question about the T-shirt, he replied about the same.

The same news was also covered by other media organisations like NDTV stating: “T-shirt hi chal rahi hai aur jab tak chal rahi hai chalayenge…”

During the investigation, we found a video uploaded on 28 December 2022 on the YouTube channel of  Aaj Tak. In this YouTube video, Aaj Tak journalist Supriya Bhardwaj is seen asking questions to Congress leader Digvijaya Singh in the context of Rahul Gandhi’s viral video. On this, Digvijay Singh replied that it depends on Rahul Gandhi. “Some people feel colder, and some people feel less. Like we feel very cold.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral claim is misleading.
