Fact Check: Does This Video Show Indian Army Crossing a Deep Gorge? Here’s the Truth

Date:

A video of a snowy area showing people crossing a deep gorge is widely shared on social media, claiming that it shows the valour of the Indian Army. Many users say that these are the real heroes of India, not the fictional heroes portrayed in Bollywood movies.

(English translation: Stop calling Gutka tobacco sellers of Bollywood heroes, the real heroes are our Indian soldiers, who protect us and our country even in adverse circumstances… Long live India)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we identified the viral video on the verified Instagram handle of Xpedition, a popular magazine based in Dubai. The extended version of the viral video was shared on this page on October 16, 2022. It has been told that the video is of the Khumbu Snowfall of Mount Everest, which is in Nepal.

The magazine has given the credit for this video to an Instagram handle  @luckydavewatson. This handle belongs to a person named Dave Watson who lives in Oregon, US. There are many videos of him climbing or trekking on snowy mountains, including this viral video. Watson shared the longer version of the viral video on April 26, 2022. In this video, several other climbers or mountaineers can be seen crossing the gap from Nasuni.

On the Instagram page, Watson has described the place seen in the video as Mount Everest’s “Ladder of the Khumbu Icefall”. “Ladders of the Khumbu Icefall on Mt Everest. There were many more that I didn’t capture, and those were the most dramatic ones, maybe next time,” reads the entire caption. Also, the clothes of the people seen in the longer version of the video do not suggest that it is the Indian Army.

Doing a Google keyword search, we found that Dave Watson is a professional Himalayan mountain climber. An article based on Watson states that he has climbed Mount Everest and K2. Watson works as a guide for a company called Furtenbach Adventures. This company is a tour operator that provides training to mountaineers and makes complete arrangements for their team to climb mountains/peaks.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that a viral video of a team of mountaineers crossing a deep gorge amid dense snow is shared with misleading claims.
