Fact Check: 2017 Protest March Against Adani Enterprises in Australia Erroneously Linked to Recent Row

Date:

After a report published by American short-seller Hindenburg Research on January 24, charges of money laundering and stock market manipulation against the Adani Group have surfaced on major media platforms. Against this backdrop, an image showing a group of people holding placards ‘Stop Adani’ is widely shared on social media.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Why Adani’s Fall Make Many Happy! Protest against Adani in Australia”

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Doing a Reverse Image Search, we found a website ‘Flickr’ carrying the same viral post, dated October 7, 2017, with a caption: “250 Eurobodalla people came to Congo Beach today to demand the federal government halt Adani’s enormous proposed coal mine in North Queensland.”

We also found a similar image uploaded on the official Facebook page of ‘Stop Adani’ on July 27, 2018.

Several media publications, including The Guardian, Mint, and Scroll, had covered the protest against Adani Enterprises held around Australia in October 2017. According to reports, “Thousands of protestors campaigning against Indian mining giant Adani’s controversial Queensland coalmine have taken to the streets in major cities across Australia to call on the government to stop it going ahead.”

Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old protest image against Adani enterprises has been shared as a recent one.
