FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral picture and found it to be fake.

With a Google Keyword Search, we identified the ‘banknotes in circulation’ tab on the official website of the Reserve Bank of Australia.

But the note features a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II and not Shane Warne.

A Press Release, dated February 2, 2023, on the same website, informs that the government is, indeed, planning to change the current portrait of Queen Elizabeth from their $5 banknote. But, it doesn’t specify that the new portrait will be of Shane Warne. It states that the RBA will consult with First Australians for the new design, and till then the current banknote will continue.

In the same context, we found a petition on the website of the Parliament of Australia demanding the image of wildlife activist Steve Irwin to be printed on the $5 note. Yet, nothing concrete has been decided by the officials on the matter.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral picture showing Shane Warne’s image on the $5 note is false.
