Fact Check: Viral Utterances Linked to Biden’s Comments on Ukraine-Russia War Are Misleading

Date:

On January 25, US President Joe Biden declared that the US would equip Ukraine with 31 Abrams tanks. The decision was consistent with the administration’s continuous military assistance to Ukraine since Russia invaded the nation in February 2022.

Against this backdrop, a graphic of Joe Biden’s remarks are widely shared on social media consisting of the text from March 11, 2022, and January 25, 2023, respectively. “The idea that we’re going to send in tanks to Ukraine, that’s called World War III. Today, I am announcing that the United States will be sending Abrams tanks to Ukraine.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

To our surprise, we found that the viral statement from March 11, 2022 omits one key remark from Biden’s speech. According to the official White House transcript, dated March 11, 2022, Joe Biden says: “We’re showing strength, and we’ll never falter. But, look, the idea that we’re going to send in offensive equipment and have planes and tanks and trains going in with American pilots and American crews, just understand and don’t kid yourself, no matter what you all say that’s called ‘World War III.’ OK?”

Biden’s full speech had been uploaded on the official YouTube channel of CNBC Television on March 11, 2022. His exact remarks can be heard at an 18-minute timestamp.

In response to a request for comment, a White House official directed Reuters to the original transcripts of Biden’s speech and acknowledged that the viral image appeared to leave out the president’s entire statements. A spokesman for the White House National Security Council told AFP that “The President’s remarks mentioned planes and tanks and trains going in with American pilots and American crews, not giving Ukraine tanks to help them defend themselves against Russia’s invasion”.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral statement linked to Biden’s comments on the Ukraine-Russia war is misleading.
