Fact Check: Old Video of Tsunami in Greenland Falsely Linked to Recent Earthquake in Turkey, Syria

Date:

Hundreds of people were killed after an earthquake of 7.8 magnitudes hit Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023, at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT).

Following the incident, multiple Facebook users started sharing a video of a huge wave hitting a house, claiming that it shows a tsunami hitting the Turkey-Syria coastline.

The post reads: Tsunami hits Turkey-Syria coastline. #earthquake #Turkey #Turkiye #Syria.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.

Running the keyframes of the video through a Reverse Image search, we identified the same video uploaded on YouTube by a verified channel Licet Studios on April 18, 2021. The video was titled: Greenland Tsunami | Wave Impact | #Shorts.

According to the video description, it was filmed by a teenager in June 2017, when a deadly tsunami hit the small town of Nuugaatsiaq in Greenland.

The same channel also uploaded a longer 6-min uncut version of the same video. They also uploaded another video of the same incident taken from a different angle.

Similar visuals were found on the YouTube channel of National Geographic, uploaded on June 27, 2017, with a title: Watch: Deadly tsunami hits Greenland | National Geographic.

The video description reads: A deadly tsunami hit a remote region of Greenland, leaving four people presumed dead. Dozens more were injured and 11 homes were washed away. The area near the small town of Nuugaatsiaq has a population of about 84. Experts think the tsunami could have been caused by a rare 4.0 magnitude earthquake or possibly by a large landslide in the area that could have tricked sensors into registering a seismic event.

Hence, it is confirmed that the video was taken in 2017 in Greenland, and not related to the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
