Fact Check: Did PM Modi Wash The Feet Of Christians on Maundy Thursday? Here’s The Truth

Date:

A video purportedly showing PM Modi washing the feet of Christians on Maundy Thursday is widely shared on social media. Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, is a significant day during Holy week that commemorates Jesus Christ’s washing of the feet and last supper with his apostles, as mentioned in the canonical gospels. It falls on the fifth day of Holy Week, coming after Holy Wednesday and preceding Good Friday.

The video has PM Modi’s speech in Hindi as well. A snippet of the audio has been translated into English: “Today is the day to give importance to service, sacrifice and mercy in our lives. Jesus says the poor do not want our favour, but they like us to receive them with affection. In the Gospel of St. Luke, it is written that “Jesus not only served the poor but praised the service of the poor.” This is true empowerment.”

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “ഇവിടെ മെത്രാന്മാര് Maundy Thursday പരിപാടി തുടങ്ങുന്നതിന് മുൻപെ അവരെ കടത്തി വെട്ടി Modiji”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search, we traced a video report by The Indian Express, dated February 26, 2019, carrying similar visuals with a caption: “Modi washes feet of sanitation workers, but numbers show a sad state.” This clearly means that the video dates back to 2019.

We also found the same video uploaded on the Twitter handle of ANI UP/Uttarakhand, dated February 24, 2019, with the text: “#WATCH: Prime Minister Narendra Modi washes feet of sanitation workers in Prayagraj.” Times of India, NDTV, and Hindustan Times also reported this in 2019.

Searching further, we found that the audio used in the viral video was taken from PM Modi’s Mann Ki Baat, streamed on December 25, 2016. The exact audio can be heard from 12 seconds timestamp.

Thus, we can conclusively say that an old and edited clip has been falsely shared as PM Modi washing the feet of Christians on Maundy Thursday.
