Fact Check: Rinku Singh Made His IPL Debut In 2017 With KXIP, Not KKR

Date:

Rinku Singh made headlines in IPL 2023, when he hit 5 sixes in 5 balls to take his side, Kolkata Knight Riders, against Gujarat Titans recently. Against this backdrop, a viral picture of Singh with the KKR owner, Shah Rukh Khan, is doing the rounds on social media. Many users claim that it was KKR who gave the first-ever chance to Rinku.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: रिंकू सिंह के पास जब क्रिकेट बैट खरीदने के पैसे नहीं थे तो क्रिकेट किट दिलाई मोहम्मद ज़ीशान ने. कोचिंग के पैसे नहीं थे तो फ्री में कोचिंग दी मसूद अमीन ने. पहला मौका दिया KKR ने जिसके मालिक हैं शाहरुख़ ख़ान. साझी विरासत की खूबसूरत तस्वीर. (English translation: When Rinku Singh did not have the money to buy a cricket bat, Mohammad Zeeshan got him a cricket kit. When there was no money for coaching, Masood Amin gave coaching for free. The first chance was given by KKR, owned by SRK. Beautiful picture of shared heritage.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Google Keyword Search about Rinku’s IPL journey, we traced an article, titled: IPL 2023: दूसरों के घर पोछा लगाया… पिता से डांट खाई, ऐसी है रिंकू सिंह की कहानी (English: IPL 2023: Mopped the house of others… Got scolded by father, such is the story of Rinku Singh) published on April 10, 2023, on News Nation. The article talks about RInku’s journey from being a sweeper to becoming an IPL sensation.

The article informs that Rinku made his Ranji Trophy debut in 2016, and then in 2017, he was picked by Punjab Kings for ₹10 lakhs. He made his IPL debut in the same season playing just one game.

Zee News, too, reported this in its article: Who Is Rinku Singh? KKR Batsman Who Smashed Five Sixes In Last Over Once Considered Becoming Sweeper, published on April 9, 2023. According to the report, Rinku was sold to KKR for ₹80 lakhs in IPL 2018, and he has been a part of the franchise ever since.

Finally, we landed on the official website of IPL. Under the squad details section of KKR, we found Rinku’s profile and here, too, it clearly states that he made his IPL debut in 2017.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming KKR gave the first-ever chance to Rinku Singh in IPL, is misleading.
