Ahead of the Karnataka elections, a video of actor Prakash Raj is widely shared on social media, in which he can be heard urging people not to vote for the Congress party. Many users have shared this video, linking it to the Karnataka assembly elections.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “A Message for Karnataka voters.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Performing a Reverse Image Search of keyframes from the viral video, we identified the official Twitter handle of Prakash Raj carrying the extended version of the same viral video, dated April 17, 2019, with a caption: “FAKE NEWS by CONGRESS.. look at the dirty politics of this party. SHAME ON CONGRESS. HAVE SENT THE COMPLAINT TO ELECTION COMMISSION WITH PROOF ..please spread and share to counter DIRTY POLITICS.” In this video, Prakash Raj is criticising the Congress party for sharing a photo of him shaking hands with Rizwan and spreading false propaganda that he supports their party.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Prakash Raj contested as an independent candidate from the Bangalore Central constituency, but lost to PC Mohan of the BJP. Rizwan Arshad from the Congress party was the runner-up in the elections.

Moreover, Prakash Raj, who is known for his strong opposition towards BJP, has predicted that Congress will emerge victorious with a significant majority in the Karnataka elections.

On May 8, 2023, Prakash Raj tweeted asking voters to bring down BJP in Karnataka. This clearly means that he is very critical of the BJP government in the state.

Thus, it is confirmed that the viral video of Prakash Raj criticising the Congress party is not related to the Karnataka elections.
