Fact Check: 2019 Image of BJP Supporters Erroneously Linked to 2023 Karnataka Poll Campaign

A post showing a collage of three pictures, two of which show a few women with alcohol in their hands, is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the post claiming that the women are BJP supporters who are campaigning for the upcoming elections.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: कर्नाटक में बीजेपी का प्रचार जोरों पर है।

You can check the post here.

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral image, we identified a tweet on an unverified account, dated December 23, 2019. The pictures in the tweet match all the images in the viral collage and the tweet, originally written in Tamil, translates to ‘BJP’s student organization #ABVP protesting in support of the Citizenship Amendment Bill …’

This proves that the images have been online since 2019.

We also came across a Facebook post, dated December 20, 2019, with the same set of images. Here too, the caption informs that the people in the images are ABVP members, who are protesting in support of the Citizenship Legislation Bill.

Although we could not verify the original source of these images, it is clear that they have been online since December 2019.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show BJP supporters for the upcoming Karnataka elections drinking alcohol in the open, is misleading.
