Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team traced a YouTube video on the verified channel of Zapping Sauvage- a French TV channel, dated September 1, 2018, and titled: A fish did that!
The video matches exactly with the viral clip and the translated subtitles indicate that the fish shown in the video is known as the ‘Japanese PufferFish’. It draws such patterns with its fins in the sand on the seabed as a courtship display and to attract a female partner.
Our team also found another video, titled: Pufferfish ‘crop circles’ – Life Story: Episode 5 preview – BBC One on the official channel of BBC. The video is a part of a 6-episode documentary called Life Story by BBC World.
The description of the video confirms that it’s the life story of a Japanese pufferfish around how it makes an extraordinary sand sculpture to attract and win a mate.
