Most Corruption Cases Against Home Ministry Followed By Railways & Banking: CVC Report

New Delhi: The Central Vigilance Commission on Sunday released its annual report on the most corrupt employees of the country. According to it, in 2022, the Union Home Ministry received the highest number of corruption complaints, followed by the railways and banking sector.

In 2022, a total of 1,15,203 corruption complaints were received including all categories of officers and personnel within central government departments and organizations. Of these, the report reveals that 85,437 complaints were successfully disposed of, while 29,766 remained pending, with a noteworthy 22,034 pending for more than three months.

The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has outlined a three-month window for chief vigilance officers, who serve as a distant arm of the probity watchdog, to investigate these complaints, a senior official stated.

According to the report, the Union home ministry received a substantial 46,643 complaints against its employees last year, 10,580 were received by the railways and  8,129 by banking sectors.

Among the complaints lodged against the home ministry employees, 23,919 were resolved, and 22,724 were pending disposal. Alarmingly, 19,198 were pending for more than three months, according to the report’s findings.

While the railways managed to address 9,663 complaints and 917 were pending disposal, with only nine remaining unresolved for over three months. On the other hand, banking institutions have disposed of 7,762 corruption-related cases, with 367 left pending, and 78 for more than three months.

The report also highlights that 4,710 complaints were against employees housing and urban affairs ministry, (including Central Public Works Department), the Delhi Development Authority, and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, among others. Out of these, 3,889 complaints were addressed while 821 were pending, with a substantial 577 pending for more than three months.

Further, the CVC annual report indicates that 4,304 complaints were directed at the coal ministry (with 4,050 disposed of), 4,236 at the labour ministry (with 4,016 disposed of), and 2,617 at the petroleum ministry (with 2,409 disposed of).

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) faced 2,150 complaints, the defence ministry faced 1,619, the Department of Telecommunications faced 1,308, the finance ministry faced 1,202, and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) faced 1,101 complaints, as highlighted by the report.

Moreover, the report stated that 987 complaints were against those working in insurance companies, 970 against employees of the ministry overseeing personnel, public grievances, and pensions, and 923 against those in the steel ministry, among other cases documented.
