Fact Check: 2018 Clip Of Jordan King’s Speech On Curbing Hate Speech Erroneously Linked To G20 Summit

Date:

India successfully hosted the G20 summit this year attended by many world leaders, including American President Joe Biden, British PM Rishi Sunak, etc. The Delhi Summit led to some landmark decisions which will help shape a new world order. It includes the announcement of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and the Global Biofuels Alliance, focusing on gender equality, sustainable growth, better digital infrastructure, health, etc.

Meanwhile, a video of Abdullah II, King of Jordan, talking about faith and curbing hate speech has gone viral on social media, claiming that he gave this speech at the G20 Summit.

A Facebook user shared this video and wrote: “Bravo to King Abdullah Hussain II of Jordan in India G-20 Summit, his 10 min address on faith, a tight slap on the face of Hindu Fundamentalists & their MENTORS.”

This Facebook post can be seen here.

It is being shared on Facebook and X with a similar claim.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

It is to be noted that Jordan is not a member of the G20, and neither King Abdullah attended the G20 meeting in Delhi. Closely observing the video, our team found the logo of Rajya Sabha TV on the bottom right of the video. With a keyword search, we found the extended version of the viral video uploaded on the official YouTube channel of Sansad TV, which had been shared on March 1, 2018 with a title: ‘Jordanian King Abdullah II’s Speech | Islamic Heritage: Promoting Understanding and Moderation’. At 0:23 seconds of timestamp, one can see a similar footage.

According to a report by NDTV, dated March 02, 2018, Jordan King Abdullah II visited India and met PM Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind. He also attended an ‘Islamic Heritage: Promoting Understanding and Moderation’ event and later addressed at the Vigyan Bhawan. During his speech he said, “We need to take back the voices of hatred from airwaves, Internet. We need to make youth understand and learn the values of religion.

We further found that the same video was uploaded to King’s official website on March 1, 2018, where the transcript of the same speech was mentioned.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral speech of Jordan’s King Abdullah II is almost five years old, and not related to G20 Summit.
