Fact Check: Viral Image of Dirty Stands Is From Hyderabad Stadium, NOT Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium

Date:

On October 4, 2023, the ICC World Cup 2023 kicked off at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, boasting a massive capacity of 130,000 spectators. The opening match featured a clash between England and New Zealand.

Against this backdrop, an image depicting an exceptionally untidy auditorium is widely shared on social media. Many people claim that this is the pathetic condition of Narendra Modi Stadium.

The image is shared on Facebook with a caption: “Narendra Modi স্টেডিয়াম #challenge #bcci”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be FALSE.

Doing a simple Reverse Image Search, the NM team identified a X handle carrying  same images, dated October 3, 2023, with a caption: “The current situation in Hyderabad stadium with just two days to go for World Cup 2023: C Venkatesh/X”.

Closely examining the ticket featured in the viral image, one can distinctly make out the name of the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium printed on it. Additionally, the date “October 3” is visible, which corresponds to the day when Pakistan and Australia engaged in a warm-up match.

As per the X profile of C. Venkatesh, in a series of consecutive tweets, he has drawn attention to the disorder and lack of cleanliness in the stands of the Hyderabad stadium, sharing multiple images and videos. He has also mentioned that he attended the warm-up match between Pakistan and Australia on October 3.

Thus, we can conclusively say that an image of the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad is falsely shared as the pathetic condition of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
