Virat Kohli Becomes Second-Highest Run Scorer In The History Of ODI World Cup

Date:

New Delhi: Star Indian batsman Virat Kohli on Sunday, surpassed former Australian captain Ricky Ponting to claim the second-highest run tally in the history of the ODI World Cup.

After Virat Kohli’s 54-run contribution against Australia in the final match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at Narendra Modi Stadium, his total runs reached 1,795 in 37 matches, maintaining an impressive average of 59.83.

Throughout his 37 appearances in the ODI World Cup, the former India skipper achieved five centuries and 12 fifties, with his highest score being 117.

Virat’s achievement elevated him past Ricky Ponting’s tally of 1,743 runs, solidifying his position as the second-highest run-scorer in the history of the World Cup.

As of now, Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar holds the top spot with 2,278 runs in 44 innings, featuring six centuries and 15 fifties.

The 35-year-old concluded his ODI World Cup 2023 journey with the most runs (765) by a batter in a single edition of the prestigious tournament, surpassing Tendulkar’s 673 runs scored in 2003.

Virat concluded with the most fifty-plus scores in a single World Cup edition, achieving nine half-centuries, surpassing Tendulkar’s seven fifties in 2003 and Shakib al Hasan in 2019.

In the 28.3 overs, Pat Cummins claimed a significant wicket by dismissing the highest run-scorer of the ongoing tournament. The Aussie skipper delivered a short-length ball that took an inside edge and hit the stumps, forcing Kohli to move out of the crease on Sunday.

Pat Cummins-led Australia won the toss and chose to bowl first against India in the World Cup final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
