Fact Check: Video Of Rahul Gandhi Talking About Mahatma Gandhi And Non-Violence Is Clipped

A video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is doing rounds on social media with a claim that in his speech, he said that Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from Islam.

Facebook users are sharing the video with the caption, “लोगों को एकदम नई जानकारी राहुल ने दी है, कि *”महात्मा गॉंधी ने अहिंसा की प्रेरणा इस्लाम धर्म से ली थी !”* इस को कांग्रेसी प्रधानमंत्री बनाना चाहते है Isse to 2nd class students achhe hain

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading.

We ran a keyword search and found that the same video was shared on Facebook back in 2019 as well.

Taking a cue from this, we started scanning YouTube for the original video. The original video was shared by the YouTube channel of INC in January 2019. The video was titled, “LIVE: Congress President Rahul Gandhi addresses Indian diaspora in Dubai.”

The viral clip can be seen at the 2:22:42 time code of the original video. In the video, he can heard saying, “In an environment of violence, of anger, and you see it everywhere, you see it in the United States, you see it in Europe, you see it in the Middle East. In an environment of anger, India has the answer. India has the blueprint to provide an answer, not just to India but to the entire planet. Non-violence is embedded inside our DNA. And it has been embedded not for 50 years. Mahatma Gandhi was a great exponent of non-violence. But Mahatma Gandhiji picked up the idea of non-violence from our great religions, from our great teachers. Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient Indian philosophy, from Islam, from Christianity, from Judaism, from every great religion where it is clearly written that violence will not help anyone achieve anything.”

Thus, from the above information, it is clear that the video is clipped and is being shared with misleading claims.
