Fact Check: Video Of Police Beating People In Ghatkopar Falsely Linked To Haldwani Communal Clashes

Date:

A video footage, showing people running away when the police resorted to lathi-charge at a public place, is doing the rounds on social media. Many users claim it to be from Haldwani after the recent communal clashes in the city. It has been shared with a communal twist, saying that police was beating only Muslims in the mob in Haldwani.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:

बीजेपी के द्वारा बनाए नए भारत के हल्द्वानी, उत्तराखंड में मुसलमानो पर लाठियां बरसाते हुए संवैधानिक पुलिसकर्मी। #Haldwani Riots #Haldwani (English translation: Constitutional policemen lathi-charge on Muslims in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, the new India created by BJP. #HaldwaniRiots #Haldwani)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team spotted a Facebook reel on an unverified profile, dated February 6, 2024, with a caption: Ghatkopar in Mumbai.

Searching further, we identified a tweet on an unverified profile, dated February 7, 2024. Here too, the video matches with the viral clip. As per its caption, the violent incident took place when Maulana Mufti Salman Azhari was arrested by the Gujarat ATS from his house in Ghatkopar. These people are allegedly the supporters of Azhari.

Azhari was recently arrested from Mumbai on February 4, 2024, in connection with a hate speech case lodged at Junagadh a day before, and was brought to Ahmedabad by a team of the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).

Although we could not find the original source of the viral clip, given that it has been online since at least February 6, 2024, it cannot be linked to the Haldwani communal clashes that took place on February 8, 2024.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show police beating Muslims in Haldwani, is false.
