Fact Check: Outdated Viral Post Fictitiously Linked To Ongoing Farmers’ Protest In Delhi

A video is being widely circulated on social media showing a person disguised as a Nihang Sikh attacking the police, claiming that it is the scene from the ongoing farmers’ protest at the Delhi border.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “क्या ये सचमुच किसान है ?? तलवार लेकर पुलिस पर जानलेवा हमला करते तथाकथित किसान। सोचो आखिर पुलिस कितना बर्दाश्त कर रही है!! आखिर कांग्रेस कहां तक गिरेगी” (English translation: Is he a farmer?? The so-called farmers are attacking the police with swords. Imagine how much the police are tolerating it!! How far will Congress stoop?)

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING. 

Doing a Reverse Image Search of the viral video keyframes, the NM team found a similar post on the Twitter account of Aaj Tak anchor Sudhir Chaudhary, dated January 27, 2021, with a caption: “Another picture of the peaceful protest of farmers.”

Searching further, we traced another video on the YouTube channel of News18 Punjab/Haryana/Himachal. According to a video report, dated January 27, 2021, the video depicts the scene of violence that occurred during the farmers’ movement in Delhi on January 26, 2020.

Though we could not ascertain the exact context of this video, it is evident from the above information that the viral video is unrelated to the ongoing farmers’ protest.
