Are you in Sikkim this summer? Places that you mustn’t miss at all

Date:

In most parts of India, summer season peaks up in May and June. This is also the time when most children are on school holidays, hence ideal to plan a vacation that lands you in a place where the weather is anything but scorching hot.

This summer, plan a trip to Sikkim. Also called the ‘hidden kingdom’, Sikkim is a combination of beauty, landscape, adventure and grandeur. The mighty Himalayas a a backdrop and the ferocious Teesta river on the ground – Sikkim promises to be a vacation of a lifetime.

What not to be missed in Sikkim?

Gangtok has delicious cafes all over. Walk around the main road, shop for traditional clothing and decoratives. Don’t miss the local momos and the flavourful chowmein.

The ‘Goecha La’, a classic route from where the Kanchenjunga is clearly visible should be on the itinerary too.

You can also undertake a day trip to Tsomgo lake (locally called Changu), located right in the middle of snow-covered mountains. Sit on a yak and feel the thrill. Head to the Nathu-La Pass, on the Indo-Chinese border and wave to the Chinese soldiers on the other side.
Visit the Rumtek and Enchey monasteries. The The Yumthang Valley is also a beautiful place that shouldn’t be missed. See the beautiful colours of flowers that bloom here.

If you want to get away from the crowds and relax in a peaceful place, head to Pelling. A must-visit is the oldest monastery in Sikkim, the Pemayangtse monastery.

The Khecheopari Lake, also known as the ‘wishing lake’ is considered holy in Sikkim. The calm and tranquility the area provides is a feeling that must be experienced.

For the adventurous at heart, head to the Gurudongmar lake situated at 17,000ft. The astonishing beauty, view and height make it almost like a feat accomplished.

Alternatively, you can trek to the lesser altitude location called Yumthang, which is at a more manageable 12,000ft. It is also called the valley of flowers because of the many rhododendron trees. Watch the snow-clad peaks, the breath-taking sights and the freshness of the Yumthang river that flows close by.
