Karnataka political crisis: Congress leaders DK Shivakumar, Milind Deora detained; key highlights

Congress leader DK Shivakumar, who has been denied entry into the Renaissance Hotel and campaigning outside the hotel, has been detained by the Mumbai Police.

He had been waiting outside the hotel since Wednesday morning to meet the rebel lawmakers as he was stopped from entering the Renaissance Hotel where rebel lawmakers are staying after they wrote to the police for protection from him.

Earlier, Congress leaders Sanjay Nirupam and Milind Deora joined Shivakumar in his vigil outside the hotel were also detained by the police.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was also detained while protesting near Raj Bhawan in Bengaluru.

Ten things you need to know:

  1. The 10 rebel Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) legislators who sent their resignation letters last week approached the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

2. They complained that Karnataka Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar was slipping up on his constitutional mandate and was delaying the acceptance of their letters.

3. On Tuesday night, the rebel Karnataka lawmakers wrote to the Mumbai police for protection from their own Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Congress leader Shivakumar. According to the letter, “We heard CM & DK Shivakumar are going to storm the hotel, we feel threatened.”

4. Shivakumar arrived in Mumbai this morning and declared: “We’ve come to meet our friends. We were born together in politics, we will die together in politics. They are our party men.”

5. Congress leader DK Shivakumar, who has been denied entry into the Renaissance Hotel by the Mumbai Police, is campaigning outside the hotel and waiting to meet the rebel lawmakers.

6. Section 144, which prohibits an assembly of more than four people at one place, has been imposed in Powai Police station limits with effect from July 9 to July 12 because of ‘likelihood of breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquillity’.

7. Meanwhile, Former Karnataka CM and BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa and other BJP leaders are protesting outside the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, demanding for the CM’s resignation.

9. SC takes note of the submission of rebel MLAs, says it will see whether their pleas can be listed tomorrow.

10. Senior SC lawyer Mukul Rohatgi is likely to represent rebel MLAs in the Supreme Court. The apex court may take up the matter on Thursday.
