HM Amit Shah tables Citizenship Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha

Date:

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday tabled the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 in Lok Sabha.

Speaking on the Bill, Shah said: “In Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Parsis and Jains have been discriminated against. So this bill will give these persecuted people citizenship. Also, the allegation that this bill will take away the rights of Muslims is wrong.”

Whereas, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury argued that the Bill is nothing but targeted legislation over minority people of our country. Countering Chowdhury, Shah said, “This Bill is not even .001% against minorities in the country”.

What is Citizenship (Amendment) Bill?

– The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill grants citizenship to non-Muslim communities (Hindus, Buddhists, Parsi, Christians, Jain and Sikhs) from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan under religious persecution.

– If implemented, the non-Muslim applicants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan would be given Indian citizenship if they had stayed in the country for five years, instead of 11 years, which is the current rule.

– The PM Modi-led BJP government cleared the contentious Bill on December 4.
