UNSC meeting on ‘J&K’ called by China deferred

Date:

A meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the issue of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will not take place on Tuesday and has been postponed. No further date has been fixed yet for this session.

France had indicated that they were against permitting any sort of discussion pertaining to this issue and will be opposing it. They called it a bilateral matter between India and Pakistan.

It was earlier reported that China had one again called for a UNSC session to discuss the issue of the Union territory even as it itself indulges in massive human rights violations in Hong Kong and the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

This come at a time when the India and US have scheduled their 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Dialogue for December 18th.

Later this month, the Special Representatives of India and China will be meeting in Delhi to discuss the issue of border dispute settlement. This was decided during the second informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Earlier on August 16th, China had called for a close door meeting on this issue, however, it couldn’t muster the required support.

Many experts are of the opinion that this is being done to either scuttle the Indo-US Ministerial dialogue or is being done at the insistence of Pakistan.
