Centre signs pact to permanently settle Bru migrants from Mizoram in Tripura

The Centre on Thursday signed an agreement to resolve the 22-year-old crisis of displaced Bru tribals from Mizoram in Tripura and announced that over 30,000 Bru migrants will now permanently settle in Tripura.

The quadrupartite agreement was signed between the Union government, the state governments of Tripura and Mizoram and Bru-Reang representatives in Delhi in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah at North Block.

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Zoramthanga and leaders of Mizoram Bru Displaced Peoples Forum (MBDPF) were also present.

The Bru tribals have been living as refugees in Tripura since 1997. The government has also declared Rs 600 crore package for resettling them.

Shah said: “Bru refugees will get a 40 by 30 feet plot along with a fixed deposit of Rs 4 lakhs, cash assistance of Rs 5000 per month for 2 years and free ration.”

“Committed to the development of the Northeast and it’s citizens! Today’s agreement will greatly help the Bru-Reang refugees. They will also benefit from numerous development schemes. A special day indeed,” PM Modi tweeted.
