“Give us your OTP for deferred EMI”, here is how cybercriminals are stealing money

Date:

“We are calling from the … bank. Please give us your OTP number so that we can enable a deferred EMI payment option from your account”.
This is the statement that is forcing many HDFC customers to fall prey and lose a large sum of money to cybercriminals.
This is a common method adopted by cybercriminals who often run call centres or even find remote locations to carry out the scam.

The customer falls into this trap firstly by giving away one’s phone number, bank account number, card number and other personal details to other organisations such as shops, cafes etc.

It is from here that these criminals get all the details from and often make calls and once the OTP number is given by the customer, the account gets debited. Many HDFC customers have called prey to this.

The RBI deferred existing EMI payments and loans by two months. Banks are already working on a method that will automatically put this in systems.

The Indian Banks Association said that they were working on the modalities to provide their customers, the option of delayed repayment of loans and EMI’s, in accordance with the RBI directive.

Banks have said that they will intimate their customers through mails, phones and messages and apprise them of this policy decision.

The Cyber Dost portal, launched by the government is being used to lodge complaints for cybercrimes
