Fact Check: This video is NOT of the terrorists from Handwara encounter; here’s the truth

Date:

A video of two militants is being shared on social media with a claim that they were involved in the Handwara encounter.

It is further claimed that even after the encounter on May 02, 2020, in which five personnel were martyred and two terrorists were killed, these two are still alive.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found the claim to be false, as the video is old.

While analysing the Facebook post, we came across many comments that indicated that the video could be old. Some of the users identified the men as Abid Wagay and Shahjahan Mir of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

We ran a search using relevant keywords and found that both the terrorists in the video were gunned down in Jammu And Kashmir in April 2019.

We also found a Facebook post, where the picture of these two terrorists was shared.

On comparing that picture to the men in the video and the accompanying news report, we found that they were the same.

NewsMobile could not independently identify the origin of the video. However, from the above information, we can conclude that the video is old and it has no connection with the recent encounter in Handwara.
