Fact Check: These pictures of spoiled leather items are not from Gurugram mall

Date:

A few pictures of mould (fungus) on leather goods such as shoes, belts, bags in a store are doing rounds on social media with a claim that they were taken at the Ambience Mall in Gurugram.

The post claims that this happened due to the nationwide lockdown amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found that the pictures are not from India.

On putting the images through Reverse Image Search, we found that the pictures are from Malaysia.

According to the article, published by Straits Times, dated May 12, 2020, the matter came to light after businesses in Malaysia reopened after over 50 days of closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Another article published by CGTN on May 12 stated that this happened in Malaysia’s Metrojaya Center which closed on March 18 under restrictions imposed to stop the spread of COVID-19.

On further investigation, we also found an official statement of departmental store Metrojaya, confirming that the pictures are from its store in Suria Sabah mall.

The above information proves that the above pictures are not from India but from Malaysia. Hence, the claim being made is false.
